This season has certainly been successful for the Portuguese player. He spoke at length about the key shootout which decided the Beach Handball Champions Cup for GRD Leça, where he made the crucial save that gave his team the title.
“Maybe because it was in Portugal and all the people were cheering, and feeling that energy — it’s like OK, that will be my time, my hour and this ball is mine,” he said, of the deciding moment.
Castro said winning gold with Portugal at the world championships and Beach Handball EURO remained one of his main aims.
“It’s not easy because you have amazing national teams — Denmark, Croatia, Spain, Hungary — that will be very very hard to win a major competition, but that has to be our dream and our goal,” he told The Spin.
Castro said he was delighted to win the MVP award for the year, noting: “My main dream in this sport is to have my name associated to beach handball. When you speak (of) Ricardo Castro, you know it’s for beach handball, for great achievements, a great posture, great sportsmanship. That is my main goal.”
